I have a inner coil mattress topped with 4" of visco elastic foam and that little bit does make a noticiable difference.
The only drawback I've seen is that Its stiffness is directly related to the temperature in the house. If I keep the thermostat above 72, it gets squishy and my back ends up hurting more. At lower temperatures its very nice for my back and an improvement over my other plain inner coil spring mattress.
Temperpedic has a VERY nice upper end model for around $2400 that's ultra-firm. Its like sinking into heaven.
