Memory foam is amazing. I wouldn't pay for the Tempurpedic name tho. There are many other brands available. Costco sells a brand and it's much cheaper than Tempurpedic. They also have a great return policy.
I bought a 4" 4lb memory foam topper for my bed and it's heavenly! I upgraded from a 2" topper. (my box spring is only 6 yrs old and in great condition just uncomfortable)
I have systemic lupus and deal with a lot of pain... the memory foam has helped so much. My shoulder and hip pain has greatly decreased also. I dread any times I have to sleep away from home because my bed is so comfortable.

I am not sure about it I have never been on one I will say for sure that my parents have one of those air beds select comfort and what a waste of money. When you are at a sitting position on the side of the bed you almost fall off the bed. This may also be true of the tempur pedic because the foam will crush down when you sit on the side of the bed. I have a nice firm pillow top bed and the first few nights that I slept on it I thought that I was going to have to get rid of it because I was so sore from sleeping on it. Then all of a sudden it got to be so good and I realized that it was my back adjusting to the new bed the old one did not have any support and was real bad for my back. I say get one like that and go to the mattress store and lay down on them! Good luck!

Some like memory foam, others hate it. Only YOU can determine which mattress configuration is the most comfortable.http://www.epinions.com/reviews/Tempur_P…
