Chronic Muscle Pain In Shoulders And Neck?

For the past siz months – year I have been waking up with terribly tense shoulders, neck, and upper back.
I sleep on a queen sized mattress which is directly on the floor of my room (no bed frame, no box spring). Could this cause muscle pain?
I sleep with one pillow, although I have a memory foam special neck pillow that I use when I just can’t stand my normal pillow.. I have to say that the special neck pillow really doesn’t make any difference at all!
I notice I do tend to “shrug” my shoulders and squish tightly to my pillow… no matter how hard I try, that is simply how I fall asleep.
Do you think all, or any of these factors are the cause of my muscle pain, and does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to relieve it?

This sounds familiar. When I would get my pillow pushed up against the headboard, I would wake up feeling like this.
To help mine when my neck is at it’s worst I would sleep with my sponge collar on and no pillow. (about 25 years ago I got T boned in my car it caused major side ways whip lash that I still have problems with today.
For Christmas I got a new pillow from my Chiropractor ( that is who could fix your problem)I bought it, it was not a present. $88.00 for a pillow. But I think you have to solve bad sleeping habits.
This pillow is molded foam, with a bowl shape to hold your head and a ramp that angles down your neck to keep it correctly supported. I have slept on it for about 5 nights now and my neck feels normal for a change. My daughter got one and fixed her snoring and my husband got one and loves it to.
But it does mean to solve the problem, you have to correct your bad habits. You can sleep on your side but it is best flat on the back.
Do try to see a Chiropractor and get your neck adjusted and you should feel much better. I have gone to a Chiropractor for 55 years and see him once a month along with a massage. This is just to feel the best I possibly can.
If you take a nighttime PM it will eliminate pain and help you get a more rested sleep. Aspircream on your neck and shoulders will help also.
    Good Luck.

Hi..there are several things that have helped me.if youre sitting a lot in day check seat and posture.
gentle stretching exercises often and when waking:roll shoulders back round and round then other way.ear to shoulder chin to chest and head back.roll head around slowly and gently both ways.raise elbows bent to sides and stertch back then front..chiropracter..every 6 months.you may have vertabrae out.you may need 2 initial treatments..they will also give you more exercises. You can take 2 Ibuprofen(anti inflamatries)MUST be taken with food for 4/5 days as when the inflamation goes down the area can heal.Apply heat..put a hot water bottle across your shoulders.the best thing for me is going to sleep with my chin tucked down rather than letting my head flop back.riding my bike also stresses my shoulders..getting stressed is bad..be aware of your neck and shoulders during the day and release by exercising when you feel tension there.
